Cholesterol is a fatty and wax-like substance produced by your liver and found in your blood. Certain amounts are necessary for various body functions, but an excess build-up (due to lack of exercise, unhealthy diet, and even genetics) can clog the flow of blood in your arteries and veins; this problem can significantly raise your risk of heart disease, stroke, or even a heart attack. Adults should have their doctor perform a blood draw (preferably a draw after a 10-12 hour fasting period) at least every 5 years…more often if there is a history of high cholesterol in the family. As with any information in this section of my site, do NOT substitute it for official medical advice from your primary health care provider!!!
